From the NJ DOH - Approval of Additional Booster Dose for People Ages 50+ and Certain Immunocompromised Individuals

COVID Vaccine
Statement From N.J. Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli

Please review the statement from Commissioner Persichilli on the CDC approval of an additional booster dose for certain populations.

Vaccinators may begin administering the 2nd booster dose to eligible populations.

As of right now, CDC has approved additional booster doses of mRNA vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna) for certain populations. Currently, the recommendation is to provide additional boosters to individuals who fall into the following categories:

  • People who received Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 Vaccine for their initial and booster doses
  • Adults ages 50 years and older
  • People ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised
These additional doses only pertain to mRNA vaccines, and the current information states that individuals who fall into the above categories can be given the additional booster dose at least 4 months after their most recent dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Please visit: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2022/s0328-covid-19-boosters.html for additional information.

CDC is continuing to provide updates, please visit: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/covid-19-vaccines-us.html as well for more information.

We will continue to share more detailed CDC guidance and the updated PODs expectations memo as available.

Thank you,
